The Gulf of Mexico Eco catastrophe created the US national political & moral crisys and U.S. government threatened to remove BP from efforts to seal a blown-out oil well in the Gulf of Mexico as it lost confidence in BP’s competence to stop the leak, though it acknowledged only the company and the oil industry have the know-how to halt the deepwater spill. In a closed-door briefing for members of Congress, a senior BP executive conceded that the ruptured oil well could conceivably spill as much as 60,000 barrels a day of oil, more than 10 times the estimate of the current flow.
Oil Rig Blowout disaster was preventable,” expert Robert Bea writes in his damning report , “had existing progressive guidelines and practices been followed.”

The report lists seven “Steps Leading to Containment Failure,” also known as “blowout,” including:
*improper well design
*improper cement design
*early warning signs not properly detected, analyzed or
corrected
*removing the pressure barrier — displacing drilling mud with
sea water 8,000 feet below the drill deck
*flawed design and maintenance of the final line of defense the blowout preventer
